Dimethyl Fumarate (Tecfidera) is an oral medication approved by the U.S. FDA for the treatment of relapsing forms of multiple sclerosis (MS). As a delayed-release capsule, it regulates the immune response through a unique pharmacological mechanism.

Indications for Dimethyl Fumarate (Tecfidera)

Primary Indications

Dimethyl Fumarate is indicated for the treatment of relapsing multiple sclerosis (RMS) in adults.

Clinically Isolated Syndrome (CIS).

Relapsing-Remitting Multiple Sclerosis (RRMS).

Active Secondary Progressive Multiple Sclerosis (SPMS).

Key Instructions

Patient Selection: Patients must be clearly diagnosed with the aforementioned relapsing forms of MS; it is not indicated for primary progressive multiple sclerosis (PPMS).

Age Restriction: The safety and efficacy of this medication in patients under 18 years of age have not been established.

Treatment Goals: Reduce the frequency of clinical relapses and the activity of MRI lesions, and delay the progression of disability.

Dosage Forms and Characteristics of Dimethyl Fumarate (Tecfidera)

120mg Capsules

Dosage Form Features

Delayed-Release Technology: Ensures the active ingredient is released in the intestinal tract, reducing gastric irritation.

Administration Requirement: Swallow the capsule whole; do not chew, crush, or sprinkle the contents on food.

Storage Methods for Dimethyl Fumarate (Tecfidera)

Temperature Requirement

Store at 15°C to 30°C (59°F to 86°F). Avoid freezing or exposure to high temperatures (e.g., inside a car, bathroom).

Light and Moisture Protection

Keep the capsules in their original bottle to avoid exposure to light and humid environments.

The desiccant inside the bottle must be retained; do not remove or ingest it.

Safe Storage

Store in a place out of the reach of children and pets, and use child-resistant bottle caps.

Handling of Special Cases: If the capsules change color, become damaged, or the desiccant container swells, discard the product immediately and contact a pharmacist.
